Summary

The seals of Shayol Ghul are weak now, and the Dark One reaches out。 The Shadow is rising to cover humankind。

In Tar Valon, Min sees portents of hideous doom。 Will the White Tower itself be broken?

In the Two Rivers, the Whitecloaks ride in pursuit of a man with golden eyes, and in pursuit of the Dragon Reborn。

In Cantorin, among the Sea Folk, High Lady Suroth plans the return of the Seanchan armies to the mainland。

In the Stone of Tear, the Lord Dragon considers his next move。 It will be something no one expects, not the Black Ajah, not Tairen nobles, not Aes Sedai, not Egwene or Elayne or Nynaeve。

Against the Shadow rising stands the Dragon Reborn。。。。。

legend。 Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again。 In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose on the great plain called the Caralain Grass。 The wind was not the beginning。 There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning of the Wheel of Time。 But it was a beginning。Premise/plot: The Shadow Rising is the fourth book in the Wheel of Time fantasy series by Robert Jordan。 The series has grown more complex--in my opinion--with each book。 The cast of characters and the amount of side stories increases。There are four-ish main stories unfolding all at once。 Not all chapters are narrated by the good guys。 Occasionally (for whatever reason, for better or worse) Jordan gives us sections--sometimes entire chapters--from the point of view of the villains。 Usually these are super tricksy and confusing to piece together。 (It could be because readers are trying to keep up with a thousand plus named characters。 According to Wikipedia the entire series has over 2,700 named characters)。 Darkfriends including the "Forsaken。" Seanchan。 Children of the Light。So the main stories:Rand is out to fulfill more prophecy and be recognized by the Aiel as He Who Comes With the Dawn。 It won't be easy。 I won't say it's more difficult than any other or every other obstacle he's faced in previous books。 But he's always in danger--with a target on his back, if you will--plenty want to turn him, use him, destroy him, etc。Mat and Egwene travel with Rand for very different reasons。 It has been revealed to Mat that his life depends on him going to Rhuidean。 The two go into the abandoned city--VERY SPOOKY ABANDONED CITY--together and have very different experiences。 Egwene is there to learn from the Wise Ones how to dreamwalk or better dreamwalk。Moraine (and presumably Lan) are along for this adventure as well。 Though as more characters come into the stories, they seem to fade into the background and be less significant。Aviendha is introduced I believe in this book。 She seems to play a major role in the story。 She watches over Rand, and it seems to be a case of hate at first sight。 (But is this hate love in disguise????)Nynaeve and Elayne are still in search of the Black Ajah。 Their mission takes them to Tanchico。 Along for the ride are Thom (the former gleeman) and Juilin Sandar (whom we met briefly in a previous book)。 It is tricky business looking for the Black Ajah because they are hunting hunters。 If they channel, they risk alerting the bad guys to their presence。 Yet sometimes it seems so necessary to channel in self defense as they face risks and dangers。Perrin and Faile (along with Loial, whom I adore) return to Two Rivers。 But all is not well--far from it--at home。 In the two years (roughly) he's been gone, a LOT has changed。 And the lives of those he cares about (and those he's just grown up with) are in danger。 He will have to be ever vigilant and ready to fight, fight, fight if he wants to protect his people/country。 MEANWHILE, PERRIN AND FAILE GET MARRIED。 *Squeal*Min--for whatever reason, convenience to the story really--is at the White Tower。 And she's there just in time to possibly save some lives。 All is not well at Tar Valon。 And it seems the Black Ajah have a few tricks。The stories are told unevenly。 That is they don't receive equal attention and weight。 You might go twenty chapters without hearing from a character only then to have them pop up again。My thoughts: I have thoughts。 I do。 I wish I had a paperback copy of this one。 The hardback was cumbersome to read from。 But the last third was truly EXCITING and ACTION-PACKED。 I might compare the first third being like standing in line to ride a roller coaster。 Your feet start hurting。 You seem to barely be moving。 It might be hot。 You are just ready for the thrills。 The second third is like getting on the roller coaster, getting ready to hold on, and perhaps going up that first big hill。 The last third--as I mentioned--is ALL THRILLS AND EXCITEMENT。 In the end it makes it worth it。I am so thankful there is a glossary。 It is super handy。 I can't imagine listening to this on audio book without a glossary to turn to whenever you need it。 I also can't imagine loving an e-book as much for the same reasons。 (Though probably an e-book would have a table of contents so maybe it wouldn't be impossible。) 。。。more

Well this is my least favorite Wheel of Time book up to now。 I must say it was kind of a drag。 The first portion was not bad at all, and there was a part near the end that I quite enjoyed。 But the middle, oh MY GOD, how the middle was long and uninteresting。 I still love the world building, the magic, all those different civilisations。 But what annoys me most is the relationship between men and women。 Always the same useless repitition of hateful and singleminded comments。 I like some of the fem Well this is my least favorite Wheel of Time book up to now。 I must say it was kind of a drag。 The first portion was not bad at all, and there was a part near the end that I quite enjoyed。 But the middle, oh MY GOD, how the middle was long and uninteresting。 I still love the world building, the magic, all those different civilisations。 But what annoys me most is the relationship between men and women。 Always the same useless repitition of hateful and singleminded comments。 I like some of the female characters most of the time, but never when they intereact with the males ones。 I have a true hate toward Faile though, what a useless character that came from nowhere。 I think there were way too many visions and dreams too。 Finally, I'll try the fifth book and I cross my fingers I will like it more, but I will need a big break before that。 Strangely enough, my opinion toward The Shadow Rising seems to be quite a rare one from what I see of the other reviews。 。。。more

This one might be my favorite。 The four pronged story of the Aiel Waste, Tanchico, the White Tower, and, last but surely not least, the Two Rivers, is an absolute thrill ride from beginning to end。

The Shadow Rising is as promised: the point at which the overall narrative and tone of WoT changes into Jordan's full voice。 Have established Rand is out for himself and whatever his plans may be, the action of the series is ramping up。。。。and about time too。 The Aiel culture is explained。 The politics and machinations of Tar Valon hit a breaking point from which we cannot return。 The shadow does indeed rise, in a way。 The "big bad" is still nowhere to be seen in any tangible way。 A number of sma The Shadow Rising is as promised: the point at which the overall narrative and tone of WoT changes into Jordan's full voice。 Have established Rand is out for himself and whatever his plans may be, the action of the series is ramping up。。。。and about time too。 The Aiel culture is explained。 The politics and machinations of Tar Valon hit a breaking point from which we cannot return。 The shadow does indeed rise, in a way。 The "big bad" is still nowhere to be seen in any tangible way。 A number of small ot points are still unresolved。 That is just fine for the first third of the series。 Perrin, on the other hand, has grown to full hero。 With him, we see the only decent romance; have a fair share of obvious, practical power; and get the victory we so yearn for。 Mat is interesting: his connection to Manetheren yet to be fleshed out; his tave'eren-ness yet to be explained。 I hold out for more from him。All in all, a very fine entry。 The fifth star is lacking, as the first quarter of the novel is filled only with what we could consider "inciting incidents。" Alot needed to be setup。。。and it was all prologue to a fair bit of action, the story finally moving into what, I believe, was Jordan's vision for the series。 Looking forward to continuing this epic tale。 。。。more

I'd say that this is my second favorite Wheel of Time book (with The Great Hunt as first and The Eye of the World behind this one), though it is very close to The Eye of the World。 Overall I enjoyed this book, the writing was good the characters were written excellently and certain scenes just gripped me to the point where I forgot that there was a world outside of the book。I still have some problems with it, mainly with the length of the book which I thought was justified by the contents of it, I'd say that this is my second favorite Wheel of Time book (with The Great Hunt as first and The Eye of the World behind this one), though it is very close to The Eye of the World。 Overall I enjoyed this book, the writing was good the characters were written excellently and certain scenes just gripped me to the point where I forgot that there was a world outside of the book。I still have some problems with it, mainly with the length of the book which I thought was justified by the contents of it, though I found that some parts dragged on a bit more than others。 But like I said, overall I enjoyed this book and found it to be an excellent continuation to The Wheel of Time and is a general fantasy book, leaving me eagerly waiting to pick up book five。 。。。more

I loved this one so much。 The first three books dealing with introducing Rand and the other main characters to the world and Rand taking his place in the story I feel was all set up just to get to this book。 Perrin has probably the best storyline in the book and certainly the most character development。 I enjoyed all of the POVs and I felt Jordan did a good job of juggling back and forth between them before you got bogged down or bored with one storyline。 Elayne and Thom's interactions for some I loved this one so much。 The first three books dealing with introducing Rand and the other main characters to the world and Rand taking his place in the story I feel was all set up just to get to this book。 Perrin has probably the best storyline in the book and certainly the most character development。 I enjoyed all of the POVs and I felt Jordan did a good job of juggling back and forth between them before you got bogged down or bored with one storyline。 Elayne and Thom's interactions for some of the best parts of the book for me, and I'm also hoping to get more Loial in the next book。 🤞 。。。more

This was another fun one! It's hard to review this properly since it's the fourth book in a series, but here I am making a bare-bones review。 Here's my breakdown:Characters 4/5I'm definitely loving the guys' plot lines over the girls' more times than not。 Plot 4。5/5The plot is still going, but following up after The Dragon Reborn (my favorite of the four so far) this just didn't feel as intriguing to me。 Still interested, just not to the same level as last book。Storytelling/Writing 4。5/5All the This was another fun one! I went into this book fully prepared to give up on The Wheel of Time, but I was pleasantly surprised to actually find myself enjoying this book。 While I still think it's too long (the audiobooks are probably the only thing getting me through the series to be honest), I like how expansive the world-building is getting (especially the Aiel!) and I am getting better at picking up hints of greater plans that Jordan is dropping throughout the narrative。 Will this series ever be a favorite? Fantastic。 I feel like the story is truly breaking through the usual fantasy tropes and stereotypes and coming into its own now。 The sections with Perrin were my favorite by a mile。 I feel like the previous books spent a lot of time building him up into a specific direction and this one really changes course in such an interesting way。 The change isn’t irrecoverable or anything, it just reduces him a bit so you really get a sense of who he is and what makes him tick。 It works beautifully and com Fantastic。 I feel like the story is truly breaking through the usual fantasy tropes and stereotypes and coming into its own now。 The sections with Perrin were my favorite by a mile。 I feel like the previous books spent a lot of time building him up into a specific direction and this one really changes course in such an interesting way。 The change isn’t irrecoverable or anything, it just reduces him a bit so you really get a sense of who he is and what makes him tick。 It works beautifully and completely won me over to him as a character。I finally feel like I’m at the place I love to be with these massive multiple books series。 I know the characters and and am now reading just as much for them as where the story will go。 Really glad I have almost 10 more to go and thousands of pages left。 I do wish the villains would develop a bit more, they are kind of one dimensional right now, but I’ve got a sense that’s coming soon。Lastly, the gleeman barely stabs anyone in this entry。 I think he’s putting in the work and managing his murderous impulses。 Very proud of him。 。。。more

Because, apparently, there is a huge hole in the plot。 (view spoiler)[Asmodean travels to Rhuidean, knowing exactly what to look for and where it can be found, and is thwarted (and sort of enslaved) by Rand。 Supposedly, he discovered the exact location of the ter'angreal in a dream。 But then, why didn't he move to fetch it any time earlier, since he had several days available? Why did he wait until Rand was clearly able to follow him? Or later, maybe。 Rand wouldn't have had a clue what that item was, so Asmodean could have gone later, when all the Aiel were gathered around the Car'a'carn and nobody would pay attention to a missing gleeman。 (hide spoiler)] Maybe this will be explained in future books, but it leaves the reader with the feeling of a major mistake at the end of the book。 Even if there was an explanation, which I doubt, it should have been given in here。 。。。more
